Reduce stress, anxiety and depression in children – A primary school has hired a hypnotherapist to help children as young as four cope with ‘stress and depression’. St Mary’s CE School in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire, has hired Anne Cartridge, 48, to run workshops with staff so they can pass on their anti-stress tips to the 194-primary school pupils.  The mother-of-two, who runs a course called ‘In Mind Therapies’, has already run workshops with youth volunteers at the school.   Ms Cartridge said her courses reduce stress, anxiety and depression in children as young as four.

St Mary’s CE School in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire, has hired Anne Cartridge, 48, to run workshops with staff so they can pass on their anti-stress tips to the 194-primary school pupils The NHS does not currently recommend hypnotherapy for clinical practice, and while it is practised by some doctors, dentists, psychologists and counsellors, it’s also offered by non-professionals with little training.  This is because in the UK, hypnotherapists don’t have to join any organisation or have any specific training by law. Ms Cartridge explained: ‘A lot of my work is dealing with anxiety, stress and depression.’If those issues are dealt with in primary school, young people can cope better in high school and it helps them feel more in control as an adult.

Don’t worry – Experts say that chronic stress can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus–crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Here’s something so that you start taking stress more seriously. People who suffer from chronic stress and anxiety may be at an increased risk for developing depression and even dementia, says a new study suggests. Experiencing anxiety, fear and stress is considered a normal part of life when it is occasional and temporary, such as feeling anxious and stressed before an exam or a job interview.

However, when those acute emotional reactions become more frequent or chronic, they can significantly interfere with daily living activities such as work, school and relationships, according to researchers at Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest Health Sciences in Canada. Chronic stress is a pathological state that is caused by prolonged activation of the normal acute physiological stress response, which can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus –crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Researchers examined recent evidence from studies of stress and fear conditioning in animal models, and neuroimaging studies of stress and anxiety in healthy individuals and in clinical populations. They looked specifically at key structures in the neurocircuitry of fear and anxiety (amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus) which are impacted during exposure to chronic stress.

Stress Is The Life Killer

Stress is the greatest problem for people in the modern world, and it’s much worse than just health problems such as Strokes, heart attacks and hypertension that are brought on by too much stress for way too long. Stress impacts EVERYTHING. 90% of all illness has its roots in stress.

Stress kills our libido, impacts on fertility, our enjoyment of life; stress causes disturbed emotions of anger, rage, sadness and depression; stress makes us clumsy; stress causes us to make mistakes and worst of all, stress makes us think stupid thoughts (we become “stress stupid”) and it cuts off the internal flow to our creative and innate talents and abilities.

It is clear that we ALL need to de-stress, whether we are teenagers who suffer from acne and migraines as a result of stress, men and women in “anger management”, authors who suffer from writer’s block even, business people who burst a blood vessel, or parents at home who aren’t enjoying their kids but end up screaming at them all the time instead.

A new scheme which uses reading to help the six million people in England who suffer from conditions such as depression and anxiety, is now available to access in libraries across Wiltshire.

Reading Well Books on Prescription will enable GPs and other health professionals to recommend 30 self-help titles for people to borrow from the local library. The service, which launched nationally last Tuesday, is now being put into place in public libraries across England.

It is a joint initiative from independent charity The Reading Agency and the Society of Chief Librarians, working with local library services and LIFT Psychology Teams, and offers people self-help books from the library as part of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) prescribed by a health professional.

Wiltshire Council, in partnership with Swindon Borough Council, will both have multiple copies of the core list of 30 titles covering issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, bulimia and sleep problems. The titles will be available to borrow free of charge from local library branches or online through the request service.

Jonathon Seed, cabinet member for libraries, said: “This scheme will allow anyone in Wiltshire, in need of such support, to access self-help books locally and for free. Our libraries are friendly, community focused places, so I am delighted we are able to participate and help support the health and well-being of many local people.”

According to The Guardian in an article published on the 19th June 2013, official figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that mild mental illness such as anxiety and depression affects nearly one in five UK adults. An in-depth look at the findings showed that the highest level of mild mental health illness is in the 50-54 year old age group and among women. Additionally high levels of anxiety or depression was seen in those who were relatively unhappy with their health compared to just 11 percent who were happy with their health.

Hypnotherapy can work towards establishing the root of the problem and teach the client techniques to control symptoms such as anxiety.”

This year’s figures are of great interest to those in the health and well-being sector as The National Council for Hypnotherapy spokesperson explained:

“It is always great to raise awareness of mental health by gathering statistics and investigating any problem areas that may be occurring in the UK. Whilst it is recommended to visit a GP if you feel you are affected by any of the mentioned mild mental health issues, it is also worth noting that complementary therapies can also help relieve symptoms. Hypnotherapy can work towards establishing the root of the problem and teach the client techniques to control symptoms such as anxiety.”

PTSD – Are you Traumatised and Stressed?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder isn’t an exclusive for war veterans! Anyone can have it given they have been in the wrong place at the wrong time so to speak. That’s not dispelling or minimising the after affects of war either.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can affect people who have been in natural disasters, air crashes, boat sinking ‘s, in fact accidents and catastrophic events even a car accident PSTD can affect you.

Here are some facts about PTSD.

It’s natural to be afraid when you’re in danger. It’s natural to be upset when something bad happens to you or your loved ones or even someone you know. But if you feel afraid and upset weeks or months later, it’s time to talk with your doctor. You might have post-traumatic stress disorder.

What is post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD?

PTSD is a real illness I’ll make that quite clear. You can get PTSD after living through or experiencing or seeing a dangerous event, such as war, a hurricane, or bad accident. PTSD makes you feel stressed and afraid even after the ‘REAL’ danger is over. It affects your life and the people around you.

If you have PTSD, you can get treatment and feel better.

Who gets PTSD?

  1. PTSD can happen to anyone at any age.
  2. Children get PTSD too.
  3. Witnessing domestic violence could trigger it
  4. You don’t have to be physically hurt to get PTSD. You can get it after you see other people, such as a friend or family member, get hurt.

What causes PTSD?

Living through or seeing something that’s upsetting and dangerous can cause PTSD. This can include:

  1. Being a victim of or seeing violence
  2. The death or serious illness of a loved one
  3. War or combat
  4. Car accidents and plane crashes

Enemy Within

On World Mental Health Day, Monday 10 October, we launched a campaign to battle the stigma of psychological disorders that prevents hundreds of Veterans from seeking help.

This second phase of The Enemy Within Appeal is planned to last two years.

The campaign, funded by Comic Relief, will address the stigma that surrounds Veterans’ mental health disorders. It will raise awareness of our services, and battle the perception of shame that deters these brave ex-Service men and women from seeking treatment for their mental wounds.
