Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher

Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher has offered no guarantees that he will be back in the Manchester United side next season, having turned to hypnotherapy among other treatments in an attempt to beat a career-threatening bowel condition. The 28-year-old said IBSSlogohis aim was to return in August, following the diagnosis of his debilitating ulcerative colitis, though that seems to be an aspiration rather than a certainty.

“I’m OK,” Fletcher said. “I’m taking all my medication and listening to the doctor. It’s a week-by-week situation so I’ve not got any timescale on recovery, but the target for me is next season now. If I can come back then that would be great for me.

“It’s something that will never leave me, but you have to find somehow a way to manage it. I’m trying everything under the sun – diet, hypnotherapy.”

Fletcher, who has been working with United reserves during his time on the sidelines, was speaking at a Manchester United Foundation lunch.

Professor Chris Probert, a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, has said he would be “very surprised” if Fletcher could perform again at his former level. “He must have been extremely fit to have been able to play for as long as he has,” Probert said. “It seems inconceivable that he would not have had his performance impaired somehow by the condition and it’s no surprise that he’s been forced to take short breaks from time to time.”

Be Clear on Bowel Cancer

 Be Clear on Bowel Cancer

The Department of Health is running a new campaign to raise awareness of the early signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and increase early diagnosis. The ‘ Be Clear on Cancer ’ campaign will run for nine weeks from the end of January, and aims to raise awareness that blood in your poo or looser poo can be early signs of bowel cancer. If England’s survival rates were to match the best in Europe for bowel cancer, 1700 lives each year could be saved. The campaign will encourage people to see their doctor straight away if they are experiencing any of the symptoms. These vital messages will be communicated via various channels, including TV, radio and print adverts, events and social media. Reinforces the message neglect kills and self diagnosis is no diagnosis – go to your GP and get checked.

The problem may be in your BRAIN

Angela Harewood still cringes at the memory of the comments she used to get from strangers about her advanced pregnancy.‘People would say things like “not long to go now” pointing to my swollen tummy,’ recalls Angela, 48, a company director from Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire. ‘It didn’t happen just once, but over and over again. The only trouble was, I wasn’t pregnant — just very badly constipated.’

All in the head? One way of treating IBS is hypnotising patients into a deeply relaxed state and asking them to place their hand on their stomach and generate feelings of warmth and comfort

Angela is one of the millions of Britons thought to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) — a problem with gut function which can cause symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, painful cramping, bloating and flatulence. The symptoms can be so severe in some cases that sufferers have to give up work. It is notoriously difficult to treat and, while the symptoms are undeniably real, tests often reveal no obvious physical cause, explains Dr Julian Stern, who treated Angela at the specialist bowel centre at St Mark’s Hospital, London.

For Angela, treatment at St Mark’s proved to be the turning point, thanks to a new approach that focuses on the link between the mind and bowel health. Angela’s symptoms started after the birth of her son, Ashley, when she was 30.
‘My constipation was awful: sometimes I couldn’t go to the loo for up to ten […]

A digested guide to perfect digestion

A digested guide to perfect digestion: Experts reveal how to relieve common symptoms – with some very surprising advice

We are a nation obsessed with our guts. From bloating to bowel issues, an estimated nine million of us have problems with our digestive systems. ‘The number of people being diagnosed with digestive disorders is on the rise, as people are taking their symptoms more seriously and are getting diagnosed earlier,’ says Dr Anton Emmanuel of the gut health charity CORE. One in five of us suffers with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterised by diarrhoea, stomach cramps and bloating.

Nine million sufferers: One in five of us suffers from Irritable Bowel SyndromeNine million sufferers: One in five of us suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Many of us resort to all kinds of measures for a healthy gut, chomping through bowls of high-fibre cereals and guzzling water. But could we be unwittingly making our symptoms worse?

Here, some of the country’s leading digestive experts dispel the most common myths and advise how to have a happy gut.

DITCH THE FIBRE

IBS patients are often told to eat more fibre. ‘But this is the worst thing for a significant number of patients, particularly when it comes to bran,’ says Peter Whorwell, professor of medicine at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester and a leading authority on IBS.

‘While eating more fibre undoubtedly helps to sort out mild constipation, it’s rarely helpful for severe IBS symptoms and it won’t help diarrhoea. Fibre is a bulking agent which gives the bowel even more work to do, so it’s likely to worsen symptoms in people with severe constipation.’

Evidence Based Hypnotherapy

Evidence Based Hypnotherapy

Review of Evidence-Based Hypnotherapy: by Donald Robertson.
Which Forms of Hypnotherapy are Evidence-Based?
Hypnotherapy as Empirically-Supported Treatment (EST)

Ratings using Chambless & Hollon (1998) criteria reviewed by David M. Wark (2008)

I beg farther to remark, if my theory and pretensions, as to the nature, cause, and extent of the phenomena of have none of the fascinations of the transcendental to captivate the lovers of the marvellous, the credulous and enthusiastic, which the pretensions and alleged occult agency of the mesmerists have, still I hope my views will not be the less acceptable to honest and sober-minded men, because they are all level to our comprehension, and reconcilable with well-known physiological and psychological principles.  – James Braid, Hypnotic Therapeutics, 1853

One of the most useful articles to be published recently was arguably Wark’s review of those studies on hypnotherapy that were rated as meeting the Chambless & Hollon (1998) criteria for “empirically-supported treatments” in the field of psychology, known as ESTs for short.  It may not surprise many NCH members to know that when the research literature on psychotherapy was previously reviewed by a task force of nineteen psychologists led by Prof. Dianne Chambless most of the psychological therapies identified as “empirically-supported” (formerly termed “empirically-validated”) tended to be specific forms of cognitive and/or behaviour therapy (CBT).  Most forms of psychotherapy, ranging from the more controversial and pseudoscientific ones to some of the more “respectable” and mainstream approaches, do not meet these strict criteria for empirical support.  However, one study was identified which demonstrated that cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy (CBH) was “probably efficacious” for weight loss in obese clients.  In this respect, hypnotherapy might (tentatively) be said to […]

When is IBS NOT IBS?

When is IBS NOT IBS?

When IBS hasn’t been checked out by the Doctor or Specialist GI Guy at the hospital.

I have seen people in a professional capacity that come to my clinic and say “What can you do for me I’ve got IBS?”. “I ask how do you know?” “Well I keep going to the toilet and its been like this for a bit now and my mate at IBSSlogowork said he had a spell of it and the doc told him it was IBS”. “So your friend must be right then… yes?” They then look at me. “I say let me be blunt here”.

This bit of information I’m about to impart is FREE yes… FREE and whats-more it could save your life!

What a bargain! GO TO THE DOCTORS

and get CHECKED OUT!  WHY?
Because SELF DIAGNOSIS IS NO DIAGNOSIS

Please go to the doctors as soon as you can, and if you want to use an excuse blame me, tell him/her that I asked you to go along and see him before I start turning off certain things and making you feel different about things. IT COULD BE BOWEL CANCER. There are what is called RED FLAG Symptoms which should always be checked By the medical profession.

They are as Follows:-

  • Bleeding from the bottom for no reason, no straining etc.
  • Bleeding with no itching or piles
  • You are over 50- 60 you are at greater risk
  • Change of bowel habits
  • Going to the toilet to more than twice a day
  • Loose stools for 3-4 weeks
  • Tired
  • Losing weight
  • A family history of bowel problems particularly cancer
  • If you have had, or do have, or members of your bloodline have had, IBD (inflammatory […]

Hypnotherapy may help ulcerative colitis

Hypnotherapy may help ulcerative colitis

Laurie Keefer, a clinical health psychologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, reckons that the therapy could certainly help boost the quality of life for patients with ulcerative colitis, a nasty gastrointestinal disease that flares without warning and makes it vital for patients to find a bathroom fast.

She says that some of her patients have started embracing activities they once avoided, after they took part in a research study, which tested if hypnotherapy could extend the time between their flare-ups.

Currently, the treatments for ulcerative colitis include a maintenance medication called 5-ASA, which should be taken as many as 12 per day that reduce the risk of flares but that many forget to take, as well as steroids or surgery to remove their colon.

Taking an early look at the data for the ongoing study, Keefer has found that treatment with hypnotherapy enabled some subjects’ to socialize more and get involved in activities such as eating at restaurants, exercising and road trips.

Some subjects feel less impaired by their disease, and are better at remembering to take their pills.

The study will be enrolling a total of 80 patients over three years, and will track the progress of each patient for one year.

To date, 27 subjects have enrolled in the study and completed the required eight weeks of hypnotherapy sessions, which also includes listening to special relaxation tapes up to five times per week.

Although it’s early, it has been found that only two of 12 subjects, who have participated in the study for a full year, have experienced a relapse, whereas based on their history, all 12 subjects would have been expected to have had two or more relapses within the […]

Hypnotherapy May Boost Quality Of Life And Health For Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Hypnotherapy May Boost Quality Of Life And Health For Ulcerative Colitis Patients

One of Laurie Keefer’s patients was afraid to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding, others worried about traveling with the boss or even going to parties in peoples’ homes.

The patients have ulcerative colitis, a nasty gastrointestinal disease that flares without warning and makes it vital for them to find a bathroom fast. The disease is often diagnosed when people are in their late 20s and early 30s. The flare-up is like having a severe stomach bug that can drag on for weeks. It ruins vacation plans, causes lengthy absences from work and generally messes up peoples’ lives at a time when they are trying to build careers and meet a romantic partner or marry.

But some of Keefer’s patients are less fearful these days and starting to embrace activities they once avoided. They’ve been taking part in a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research study to test whether hypnotherapy can extend the time between their flare-ups. Currently, the treatments for ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, include a fistful of pills — up to a cumbersome 12 a day that reduce the risk of flares but that many forget to take, as well as steroids or surgery to remove their colon.

In an early look at the data for the ongoing study, Keefer, a clinical health psychologist and an assistant professor of medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, is finding that treatment with hypnotherapy enabled some subjects’ to socialize more and get involved in activities such as eating at restaurants, exercising and road trips. Some subjects feel less impaired by their disease and are better at remembering […]
