Don’t worry – Experts say that chronic stress can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus–crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Here’s something so that you start taking stress more seriously. People who suffer from chronic stress and anxiety may be at an increased risk for developing depression and even dementia, says a new study suggests. Experiencing anxiety, fear and stress is considered a normal part of life when it is occasional and temporary, such as feeling anxious and stressed before an exam or a job interview.

However, when those acute emotional reactions become more frequent or chronic, they can significantly interfere with daily living activities such as work, school and relationships, according to researchers at Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest Health Sciences in Canada. Chronic stress is a pathological state that is caused by prolonged activation of the normal acute physiological stress response, which can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus –crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Researchers examined recent evidence from studies of stress and fear conditioning in animal models, and neuroimaging studies of stress and anxiety in healthy individuals and in clinical populations. They looked specifically at key structures in the neurocircuitry of fear and anxiety (amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus) which are impacted during exposure to chronic stress.

Hypnosis appears to lessen the pain and emotional distress of people who are trapped or injured after accidents, Haguenau station manager David Ernenwein said.

Fire brigades keep a person under hypnosis in a vehicle during an extrication exercise, on May 28, 2013 in Haguenau, eastern France.

“Look me straight in the eye. Your mind is emptying, your body is relaxing,” says the fireman, using the calming words of hypnosis to help a trauma victim — a technique being pioneered by fire crews in the eastern French region of Alsace.

At the Haguenau fire station, 120 firemen have been trained in basic medical hypnosis which they can use to soothe someone trapped under rubble or in a car following an accident, or even a person suffering an asthma attack.

The idea is that hypnotherapy can complement traditional first aid assistance.

“These are verbal, gesticular and respiratory techniques that aim to ease pain and anxiety, but that obviously don’t replace traditional first aid,” explains Cecile Colas-Nguyen, a nurse and member of the fire brigade, and a trainer in hypnosis.

While firefighters arriving on the scene of an accident get to work tending to the injured or cutting a victim free, staff trained in hypnosis establish a more personal link with the person and divert his attention away from the trauma of the scene.

Fire fighters trained in clinical hypnotherapy

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to Hypnotism Being Used to Help Victims in Traumatic Situations

According to Connexion France in an article published on the 24th June 2013, the complementary therapy hypnotherapy has been used to help victims of traumatic situations, helping them to remain calm and focus on relaxing situations rather than the traumatic situation they are currently in. At Haguenau fire station in France some 120 fire-fighters have been trained in basic medical hypnosis in order to soothe victims of accidents and serious traumas. The idea is that hypnosis can be used alongside traditional medical techniques to help the patient physically and mentally. The fire-fighters tend to establish an interest or like of the patient and use hypnosis to help them imagine that, ‘While my colleagues take care of your safety, your mind will take off to the ski slopes and your body is going to stay here,” explained a trained member of the team.

Describing the effectiveness of hypnotherapy station manager David Ernenwein said:

“We have all noticed that when we hold someone’s hand, things go better, even if we did not label it as hypnosis. The first thing we can do to help people is to calm them down, and this technique has given us the tools to be able to do that, to help people suffer less.”

The introduction of such techniques is supported by UK based hypnotherapist directory, The National Council for Hypnotherapy. A representative from the Council explained:

Healthwatch Dudley & Dudley CCG  – Ideas for future structure of local health delivery

Proposed structure of local health delivery in Dudley and beyond – Why? The structure of healthcare in the community should in my opinion should be reviewed. I have had conversations with The King’s Fund regarding health care provision for the future in the UK. I have voiced these ideas to try to stimulate dialogue, but getting to the decision makers in very near impossible. Making me believe the top down approach to decision making despite the portrayal of a bottom up approach to changes in local and national NHS Service. The proposed ‘Phoenix structure” is to utilise local schools and redundant buildings that have for whatever reason become redundant.

Why a rethink?

The current community health centre is just that, a health centre. what I propose is a centre with a health section but encompassing all the disciplines listed below. Stress is the foundation for many illnesses and if eliminated or substantially reduced, could bring about fundamental change to the local communities, their Health and wellbeing and wealth to the country ultimately. GDP suffers due to the amount of hours lost to stress alone, let alone the additional burden of all the more serious implicated illnesses caused by stress. These in my opinion could be alleviated if not eliminated for the majority by introducing a centre that was multi faceted.

One of the most useful articles to be published recently was arguably Wark’s review of those studies on hypnotherapy that were rated as meeting the Chambless & Hollon (1998) criteria for “empirically-supported treatments” in the field of psychology, known as ESTs for short.  It may not surprise many NCH members to know that when the research literature on psychotherapy was previously reviewed by a task force of nineteen psychologists led by Prof. Dianne Chambless most of the psychological therapies identified as “empirically-supported” (formerly termed “empirically-validated”) tended to be specific forms of cognitive and/or behaviour therapy (CBT).  Most forms of psychotherapy, ranging from the more controversial and pseudoscientific ones to some of the more “respectable” and mainstream approaches, do not meet these strict criteria for empirical support.  However, one study was identified which demonstrated that cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy (CBH) was “probably efficacious” for weight loss in obese clients.  In this respect, hypnotherapy might (tentatively) be said to […]
