Studies have shown that visualisation is as effective as reality in improving sports performance. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be physically up to your game. I work with your mind. What this does mean is that if a you can visualise your routine, and really experience every muscle movement needed to carry that out, then those muscle groups will ‘fire’ providing energy at the appropriate time and delivering just the right amount. These controlled bursts of energy allow the sports-person to conserve their strength, minimizing effort where it’s not needed and maximizing power where it is.

The brain can fix these perfect movements and memories in your subconscious, and you can create a memory, both mental and physically of that event or sequence. The stronger the emotion experienced when producing that memory (for subconscious and body) the more chemicals are released into the brain, the more the memory will remember what’s right for that circumstance. This form of visualisation is a form of self-hypnosis resulting in a light waking trance heightening the experience in your mind.

Developing that further in deeper hypnosis. It is easier to become completely absorbed and enveloped in that experience, and its possible to feel the emotion of winning and fixing that routine and rhythm into what in turn turns into a ‘event or body memory’. This ‘event or body memory’ is one of the things we are trying to achieve, this feeling of being in The Zone and right technical mode, with the body in the right position etc.

Studies have been made on the use of visualisation. When we train we really experience every muscle movement to carry it out, then those memory muscle groups will fire (Opinion remains divided. Some experts believe that small neuro muscular firings provide sufficient feedback from imaging feedback to allow for changes in performance), the brain can fix these perfect movements, and you can create a memory, both mental and physical (event memory).

The stronger the emotion you experience when producing a the more chemicals released into the brain, the more the memory will fix that memory in your brain.

Visualisation is in fact a form of self-hypnosis resulting in a light waking trance. With deeper hypnosis it is easier to become completely immersed in that experience and the emotion of winning, so fixing the body memory.

  • Visualisation allows you to practice and prepare for events and eventualities you can never  train for in reality. With practice it allows you to enter a situation you have never physically experienced.

  • Practising the relaxed state of hypnosis helps you to break down the complex skills into constituent parts so that you can isolate where problems are.This body memory is one of the things we are trying to achieve with constant repetition of training. Unfortunately unless you are able to get the movement right every time in training you may actually be fixing some faults into your performance, especially if emotions run high when you make a mistake.   • In 1956, Eleven hypnotists accompanied the Soviet athletic team to the Olympics in Melbourne.
