This is a brief response to recent, and frequent searches, on this site for information regarding the above and your IBS. Someone must know I like a drink!
Irritable bowel syndrome is in my opinion affected by the yeast that is still present or left over during the brewing process, thats what helps us to get the lovely brew tasting and nose of a pint and also having a foaming head like it does. Cask beer? I think its called, along with many largers are brought to the tap by CO2 this sometimes has less residual yeast causing a problem because in bottled beers the yeast is reactivated before capping with a small amount of sugar to give it some head when you open the bottle/can and pour it, but cask beers and lagers are less of a problem in other words because the Co2 does the lifting from the cellar and puts a head on the stuff, as an extra advantage i suppose you can drink more until you get to your 'critical level' (not drunk no...) but where the yeast upsets you. However remember that the yeast will not pass straight through you and you could get the yeast culture set up resident causing you problems for a day or two after. Taking a good pre and pro biotic all the time can reduce the yeast effects and give other benefits besides. I will talk more about this in my book I digress. This I believe, interacts with the gut flora present and can act as a trigger for IBS-D and IBS-W the wind makers amongst us can be just as badly affected as those with diarrhoea. The IBS-C may even get a visit out of the consumption, far be it for me to recommend alcohol as a respite from constipation, but perhaps someone will comment and let me know on this one.
Wine, for me had two issues, yeast that activated the grape juice to start the fermenting process ( as above) and Sulphites used to clean and clear the look of the wine to give it that clear clean crisp look in the glass. This little additive was a nightmare for me a 'red wine connoisseur' not really I just like a glass of Rioja, The problem with this is that it also would activate the IBS-D in me reason i will try to explore and modify this article when I Do. Advice, have I got any? Well I have been drinking Belgian Larger Stella Artois and it had far less effect than CAMERA Acknowledged fine ales , much yeast is left to give it a fine head as it is drawn through traditional beer engines in UK pubs. This is much to my disgussed and regrettably so as far as I'm concerened but then i am of an age lets say! The wine I'm affraid there is only one answer you will have to, read the labels and go up the price range in the wine store or supermarket to find the better wines with no additives in it. SO... You Pay more get better tasting wine without the agony. This has another positive effect you never consume too much wine ... Otherwise Guys and Gals it stick with it. You Know the saying " Continue doing what you do today and you will continue experiencing the same result tomorrow - YES IBS-D or IBS-W I'm afraid the choice is your but at least you now know what it is thats kicking your symptoms off.
