Reduce stress, anxiety and depression in children – A primary school has hired a hypnotherapist to help children as young as four cope with ‘stress and depression’. St Mary’s CE School in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire, has hired Anne Cartridge, 48, to run workshops with staff so they can pass on their anti-stress tips to the 194-primary school pupils.  The mother-of-two, who runs a course called ‘In Mind Therapies’, has already run workshops with youth volunteers at the school.   Ms Cartridge said her courses reduce stress, anxiety and depression in children as young as four.

St Mary’s CE School in Rawtenstall, in Lancashire, has hired Anne Cartridge, 48, to run workshops with staff so they can pass on their anti-stress tips to the 194-primary school pupils The NHS does not currently recommend hypnotherapy for clinical practice, and while it is practised by some doctors, dentists, psychologists and counsellors, it’s also offered by non-professionals with little training.  This is because in the UK, hypnotherapists don’t have to join any organisation or have any specific training by law. Ms Cartridge explained: ‘A lot of my work is dealing with anxiety, stress and depression.’If those issues are dealt with in primary school, young people can cope better in high school and it helps them feel more in control as an adult.

Don’t worry – Experts say that chronic stress can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus–crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Here’s something so that you start taking stress more seriously. People who suffer from chronic stress and anxiety may be at an increased risk for developing depression and even dementia, says a new study suggests. Experiencing anxiety, fear and stress is considered a normal part of life when it is occasional and temporary, such as feeling anxious and stressed before an exam or a job interview.

However, when those acute emotional reactions become more frequent or chronic, they can significantly interfere with daily living activities such as work, school and relationships, according to researchers at Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest Health Sciences in Canada. Chronic stress is a pathological state that is caused by prolonged activation of the normal acute physiological stress response, which can wreak havoc on immune, metabolic and cardiovascular systems, and lead to atrophy of the brain’s hippocampus –crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation. Researchers examined recent evidence from studies of stress and fear conditioning in animal models, and neuroimaging studies of stress and anxiety in healthy individuals and in clinical populations. They looked specifically at key structures in the neurocircuitry of fear and anxiety (amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus) which are impacted during exposure to chronic stress.

Mindfulness based hypnosis – We live in a global village, comprised of people with diverse cultural and religious orientations. How do we integrate these different beliefs and values into our clinical practice? Mindfulness-based psychotherapy (MBP), an evidence-based psychological intervention, provides a secular template for assimilating various cultural beliefs and wisdoms in therapies. MBP represents a cross-fertilization between Western psychological practice and Eastern meditative disciplines. Guided by MBP, this article describes how intention, mindfulness, acceptance, gratitude, and the “heart” can be combined with cognitive hypnotherapy to catalyze healing of emotional disorders-particularly depression. This integrated approach is referred to as mindfulness-based cognitive hypnotherapy (MBCH) as it assimilates cognitive hypnotherapy with mindfulness strategies. MBCH represents an attempt to broaden the comprehensiveness of hypnotherapy as an integrated form of psychotherapy. Additionally, based on new understanding of the heart as a complex information center, an innovative hypnotherapeutic strategy for generating psychophysiological coherence and psychological well-being is described.

According to The Guardian in an article published on the 19th June 2013, official figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that mild mental illness such as anxiety and depression affects nearly one in five UK adults. An in-depth look at the findings showed that the highest level of mild mental health illness is in the 50-54 year old age group and among women. Additionally high levels of anxiety or depression was seen in those who were relatively unhappy with their health compared to just 11 percent who were happy with their health.

Hypnotherapy can work towards establishing the root of the problem and teach the client techniques to control symptoms such as anxiety.”

This year’s figures are of great interest to those in the health and well-being sector as The National Council for Hypnotherapy spokesperson explained:

“It is always great to raise awareness of mental health by gathering statistics and investigating any problem areas that may be occurring in the UK. Whilst it is recommended to visit a GP if you feel you are affected by any of the mentioned mild mental health issues, it is also worth noting that complementary therapies can also help relieve symptoms. Proposed structure of local health delivery in Dudley and beyond – Why? The structure of healthcare in the community should in my opinion should be reviewed. I have had conversations with The King’s Fund regarding health care provision for the future in the UK. I have voiced these ideas to try to stimulate dialogue, but getting to the decision makers in very near impossible. Making me believe the top down approach to decision making despite the portrayal of a bottom up approach to changes in local and national NHS Service. The proposed ‘Phoenix structure” is to utilise local schools and redundant buildings that have for whatever reason become redundant.

Why a rethink?

The current community health centre is just that, a health centre. what I propose is a centre with a health section but encompassing all the disciplines listed below. Stress is the foundation for many illnesses and if eliminated or substantially reduced, could bring about fundamental change to the local communities, their Health and wellbeing and wealth to the country ultimately. GDP suffers due to the amount of hours lost to stress alone, let alone the additional burden of all the more serious implicated illnesses caused by stress. These in my opinion could be alleviated if not eliminated for the majority by introducing a centre that was multi faceted.

Rick Spleen is a ‘what-if version of me’, says Jack Dee. Well what if we made it our mission to cheer him up?

There’s a dark cloud approaching … oh, and the weather doesn’t look too great either. The cloud in question is Jack Dee, comedy’s most lovable grump, who has agreed to let the Guardian and its very own crack team of happiness experts spend the day trying to cheer him up. Of course, when we say “crack team of happiness experts” what we actually mean is a journalist with a ticket for the duck bus.

The plan is as follows. Study reveals sharp rise in people suffering stress, anxiety and depression due to redundancies and job insecurity

An office worker contemplates redundancy Among people who have lost their jobs in the last year, 71% have suffered symptoms of depression.

The number of people suffering stress, anxiety and depression because of redundancies, job insecurity and pay cuts owing to the recession is soaring, a study published today reveals.

Worries about the effects of the downturn have produced a sharp rise in people experiencing symptoms of common mental health conditions, according to the report, by academics from Roehampton University and the children’s charity Elizabeth Finn Care.

The incidence of depression has jumped by between four and five-fold as unemployment, cuts in hours and concern about security of tenure have become common, the report found. Among people who have lost their jobs in the last year, 71% have suffered symptoms of depression, 55% said the same about stress and 52% experienced symptoms of anxiety.

Those ranked as of middle socio-economic status were more likely to experience depression (59.8%) than those from lower (44.9%) or higher groups (46.7%).

Among those who had experienced a drop in salary or cut in their hours or days, 51% said they had experienced symptoms of depression, 48% said the same for anxiety and 45% experienced stress symptoms.

Those aged 18-30 were more likely to suffer from depressive symptoms than any other age group.

Dr Joerg Huber, principal lecturer at Roehampton University, said: “What makes our findings worrying is the high percentage of people reporting symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. This applies even more to those who have lost their job or experienced a major loss of income.”
