A British woman has lost four stone after being hypnotised into thinking she had a gastric-band fitted. Hypnotism is clearly powerful stuff as this woman’s weight-loss campaign and the following tales prove.

Chicken Nuggets

After 18 years of eating nothing but chicken nuggets and chips, a student was last year weaned off her unhealthy diet by a hypnotherapist and started to eat vegetables and pasta. Since she was two-years-old Carla Laban was violently sick after every meal unless it was chicken nuggets, but now she is starting to enjoy other foods.

IBS
Hypnotherapy may be able to cure irritable bowel syndrome after trials showed it has a 70 per cent success rate. Doctors claim the mind relaxing technique combats the condition, which causes constipation, diarrhoea, cramps and nausea. The treatment is so successful that there is an 18-month waiting list of people lining up to try the therapy at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital.

Sex
According to Australian psychologist Dr Janet Hall hypnosis can help cure women of sex phobias such as the fear of sperm and vaginismus, a fear of intercourse. “I’ve found that with hypnosis you can get them to rehearse the sex act in the safety of their own imagination,” Dr Hall told a conference in Sydney.

The importance of an early diagnosis of gluten intolerance (coeliac disease) cannot be over stressed.  Left undiagnosed and untreated, coeliac disease carries a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, infertility and bowel cancer later on in life.

If you do have coeliac disease, a gluten free diet could change your life within weeks… but first, get a diagnosis.

Feeling tired, IBS symptoms, urgency to use the toilet after eating, nausea, mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, bloating, wind, constipation, headaches, depression, bone and joint pain, weight loss, anaemia…. the list goes on and could mean you have IBS but any one of these symptoms could also mean that you have coeliac disease (gluten intolerance).

Unlike IBS, coeliac disease (also spelt celiac) is a risk factor for other diseases such as bowel cancer, infertility and osteoporosis. Early diagnosis is essential. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people originally diagnosed with IBS actually have coeliac disease.

In 2006 and 2007 the home coeliac test was used to test MPs at the House of Commons as part of an awareness raising event by Coeliac UK, a charity providing support and advice for people diagnosed with coeliac disease.

A report in the British Medical Journal  which studied 2690 children and 120 adults showed that the finger prick blood test for coeliac disease was as accurate as hospital laboratory tests (Korponay-Szabo et al. BMJ 2007;335;1244-1247).

Half a million people in England use hypnotherapy every year.  It’s claimed it can help with smoking, obesity, tinnitus, weight loss, phobias, allergies, anxiety and even breast enlargement.  What do we know about hypnotherapy and hypnosis?  And how are scientists trying to find out about how it works and its effectiveness?

In the first in a new series, Professor Kathy Sykes, Professor of Science and Society at Bristol University, embarks on a personal and scientific journey to explore three popular alternative therapies: reflexology, meditation and hypnotherapy.

Travelling across the UK, Europe and over the Atlantic to Montreal, Kathy Sykes, in a journey that is at times funny, intimate, moving and revealing, she follows patients who are pinning their hopes on hypnotherapy.  There is Richard, the policeman, who wants to quit smoking; Nicola, who wants to eat less chocolate; and Mandy, who wants teeth implants without anaesthetic. If you’re happy to carry on working with me, we can have an hour session of hypnotherapy directly afterwards, provided the diary allows – so you should plan for you initial meeting with me to be one and a half hours. Subsequent sessions will be one hour.

I do not usually see clients in the comfort of their own homes. This is usually because there are too many distractions and in some cases the very thing we are to work on is associated with the home environment in some way. I therefore use a Clinic Environment. However if you are nervous, I understand it may be a new experience for you so  it’s OK for a friend or relative to come along with you.
